Pet Insurance
We know that, having adopted a Greyhound from us, you want to give them the best life possible. And as part of being a responsible greyhound owner, Pet Insurance is something that should be put in place. With advancements in veterinary medicine it’s important to choose the right insurance for your greyhound so you can get the right treatment for them without having to worry about the costs. However, if you have your greyhound covered with a pet insurance company, then decide to leave to go with another insurance provider, any pre-existing conditions that your greyhound may have will not be covered on any new policy.
Do I need pet insurance?
Recent research shows that the average Pet Insurance claim for 2018 came to a staggering £793! Unfortunately, there isn’t an NHS for pets to keep costs low, so the need for pet insurance is getting greater. This is where pet insurance can help with the cost of treatment and give you peace of mind that your greyhound can get the care they deserve. Without pet insurance in place, it can leave you vulnerable to vet bills that could run into the thousands!
Types of Insurance:
There are 4 main types of cover to consider, each with varying levels of vet fee limits.
Lifetime – A Lifetime or Lifelong policy provides an annual benefit limit. The limit is then reinstated at renewal. The policy covers your greyhound’s veterinary fees for as long as you need, provided your policy is renewed.
Maximum Benefit – A maximum benefit policy covers your greyhound per unrelated condition. This is until the vet fees limit for each illness or accident is reached. After this, treatment for that illness or accident will be excluded from cover for the rest of the policy’s life.
Time Limited – Time Limited policy covers your veterinary fees up to a limit. Your greyhound is on cover for a maximum period of 12 months from the date the illness or injury was first noticed or until the vet fee limit for each illness or incident has been reached, whichever occurs sooner. Afterwards treatment for that accident or illness will be excluded from cover for the remainder of the policy’s life.
Accident Only – An Accident Only policy only covers your greyhound in the event of an accident – this means that you wouldn’t be covered if you greyhound was to develop an illness.
Things to think about:
There are many pet insurers out there offering different cover at different prices. When shopping around for a policy, we recommend that you consider the following:
What is the Veterinary Fees excess, and does this go up as your greyhound gets older?
Will the insurer pay the vet directly?
Does the policy cover congenital, hereditary, hip-related, dental and behavioural conditions?
Will your premium increase if you make a claim?
